The hypopharynx is the bottom part of the throat that is also called the pharynx. The pharynx acts as the passageway for air and food to get to the trachea or esophagus.

The hypopharynx consists of the piriform sinus, the posterior hypo pharyngeal wall, and the posterior cricoid region.

Cancer can form in the hypopharynx. However, treatments are available.

Some common factors that cause hypopharynx cancer include:

  • Tobacco
  • Heavy drinking,
  • Not enough nutrients
  • Plummer- Vinson syndrome, a disorder related to severe iron deficiency anemia.
